Why are people scared of becoming bone marrow donors?

My son needs a Bone Marrow Transplant. I want to know what the fears of people are. It's not a life threatening procedure. It is fairly straight forward and the Donor spends no longer than a day in hospital. Why is it that people are still reluctant to register to become a potential bone marrow donor?
