Are attacks on the meaning of Feminism deliberate attempts to discredit it or genuine misunderstanding?

Those who don't like what feminism stands for will try to undermine it. These new names like modern and radical feminism is likened to politics (left and right wing extremists). It gets away from the true meaning of equality of the es. Feminists can give the movement a bad name themselves. Others just don't understand the ideals of the movement. Then it becomes fear of the unknown.
