For a player to officially break Cal Ripken jrs streak does he have to play entire games or just part of them?

OR Just play in any part of the game? You can put in as a substitute right fielder or pinch hitter, and stay there for less than a half inning and leave and would still count as a "game played" in his stats? To officially break Cal Ripkens record, would he have to play all of the entire games in a row or could he just play a small part of each game and still officially have the record? What about an entire career as a DH?
