Is my ESN clean if my phone's contract isn't up?

I hate my Android and want to trade it for a blackberry with someone but will it be problematic since my phone's contract isn't up? My bill is paid and everything so there aren't any technical outstanding charges on my account and I am not wanting to end my account just switch the phones.
